Simple Machines

Goal: Create a complex machine that will lift a standard, unopened can of Campbell's Soup (preferably vegetable) at least 10 centimeters off the ground using an input force that is less than the weight of the soup can.

Rules:

1. The construction of your complex machine should be done in class

2. You may not use "pre-made" sets or any kits that are used for the purpose of lifting objects

3. Your complex machine MUST CONSIST OF TWO OR MORE SIMPLE MACHINES.

4. The input force will consist of placing a known mass "on top" of your complex machine and nothing more.

5. Your input force will be calculated by weighing the mass you use

Grading:

REFER TO THE "NEWTON SCOOTER" PROJECT SHEET. You must keep a daily log, sketches, and discuss fully how your complex meachine uses simple machines. You will be graded on: Performance, design, report, and teamwork.

Prizes (1/2 letter grade extra credit):

1. Most creative design

2. Smallest input force

3. Highest lift

4. Best teamwork

Hints:

input work = output work - friction

F x D (input) = F x D (output)

you want to maximize the output force and minimize the input force!
