MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF

 

THE ZIONSVILLE PARK AND RECREATION BOARD

 

June 12, 2002

 

The Zionsville Board of Park and Recreation met Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at 7:30 p.m. Board members George Tikijian, Linda Oxenrider, Art Small, and Deb Ruckman were present.  Roger Burrus, Board Counsel and Al Smith, Park Superintendent were also present.

 

Art Small moved to approve the May minutes.  Seconded and passage was unanimous. 

 

Superintendent’s Report

 

Al Smith reported the following:  a new roof has been installed on the Zion Nature Center at the cost of $7,880 and that due to the very wet spring 11 Garden Plot refunds were issued.  30 plots were rented in 2002. 

 

OLD BUSINESS

 

Community Center

 

Joseph Farah, the Community Center’s new Director reported that the 1st summer session is under way. 

 

Zionsville Lacrosse Club

 

Recreation Committee member, Joseph Farah reported that the committee recommends that the Board purchase a scoreboard for Jennings Field at the cost of up to $1,500 and that the Board match dollar for dollar up to $1,200, the cost of two goal posts and equipment for lacrosse camps.

 

Deb Ruckman moved to approve the expenditures recommended by the Recreation Committee, subject to scoreboard approvals by Zionsville Community Schools and if necessary by the Zionsville Plan Commission.  Seconded and passage was unanimous.

 

Zion Nature Sanctuary

 

Al Smith reported that the Boone County Drainage Board has approved CEA’s current design for the creation of a wetland.

 

Creekside

 

Al Smith reported that sealed bids for the project are being accepted at Town Hall until 11:00 a.m. on July 8, 2002.  The bids will be publicly opened and read aloud immediately thereafter at Town Hall.

Zion Nature Center

 

Gabrielle Nicholas reported that the public open house that was held at the Nature Center on May 18th and 19th from noon to 4:00 p.m. went well.  She also reported that Lynn Jenkins, James Cole, and Lynn O’Brien have been hired to staff the Nature Center.  The three staff members will work a combined total of 20 hours per week.  Beginning June 29, 2002 the regular operating hours will be 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. 

 

Wetland Area

 

Al Smith reported that Robert Carter’s consultant, JF New is reviewing the boardwalk design.

 

Master Plan Review

 

George Tikijian reported that the 2002 Master Plan is to be reviewed and updated every June.  No updates were made.

 

Linda Oxenrider moved the Board approve the claims submitted.  Seconded and passage was unanimous.

 

The next Park and Recreation Board meeting will be July 10, 2002.
